Individual and group occupational therapy in nature for children in the Big Bend Region
Occupational therapy uses everyday activities to improve people's ability to navigate the world. Occupational therapy can help your child develop their cognitive skills, motor skills, play skills, social skills, and more!
Nature-based therapy uses the outdoors as a tool to improve your child's functioning and wellbeing. Children commonly thrive in nature-based therapy due to the organic environment free of bright lights and artificial noise.
Individual or group therapy placement will be determined at evaluation using a collaborative approach between your family, your child, and your occupational therapist.

At Sunshine Kids Therapy, individual therapy sessions are 60-minute, one-on-one sessions with your child and an occupational therapist to work on your child's individual goals.
Individual Therapy Is Great For:
Children who need individualized therapy sessions curated to their specific goals
Children who need focused, one-on-one attention from an occupational therapist
Children who need help improving self-regulation and emotional control before joining a group
Families who want one-on-one support to work on their child's specific goals

At Sunshine Kids Therapy, group therapy sessions are 90-minute sessions with your child, an occupational therapist, a group assistant, and similar-age peers to help your child create friendships, build social skills, resolve conflict, improve critical thinking, and more!
Group Therapy Is Great For:
Children who struggle with teamwork, sportsmanship, and making friends
Children who struggle to manage conflict, particularly with other children
Children who struggle to play with other children, especially sharing and turn taking
Children who struggle with impulse control and attention to task
Please note: there are specific safety precautions for children to participate in group therapy.
In group therapy, children do not receive one-on-one services. The group ratio at Sunshine Kids Therapy is typically 1 adult per 2 children. This means that your child must have basic safety awareness to be in a nature setting outdoors with an adult nearby, but NOT always within arm's reach.
Group Safety Expectations:
Stay within 10-20 feet of the group (no wandering, eloping, or running away)
Follow 1-2 step verbal or visual directions
Use a safe body/hands when frustrated (no hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, or grabbing)
Communicate basic needs when asked (for example: needing to use the bathroom, feeling hot/cold, or hurt)

Group Therapy
Step 1: Comprehensive Evaluation
Step 2: Goal Setting & Group Placement
Step 3: Group Therapy Sessions
Your occupational therapist will ask you questions about your child, observe your child during play, and complete a standardized assessment with your child to see what tasks they are struggling with.
After your child finishes the standardized assessment, your occupational therapist will work with your family to create specific goals that will help your child grow and learn.
This appointment takes between 60-90 minutes.
Once we part ways, your occupational therapist will write a report including observations, standardized assessment results, and therapy goals. Your family will have access to this report within 48 hours of your comprehensive evaluation appointment.
The occupational therapy evaluation process is the same for both individual and group therapy services. At Sunshine Kids Therapy, we want to get to know your child and your family before we start our therapy journey together!
Sunshine Kids Therapy enrollment opens for both individual and group occupational therapy 5 times per year. Your child can be evaluated at any point in the year. After evaluation, your child will begin therapy at the closest program start date.
